My husband has been deployed for awhile now, and even though we miss him terribly, when he is gone he always sends the BEST gifts from other countries.
Here are some beautiful watercolors he just mailed home. (Most of them are around 5×7, they only appear larger in these pictures…)
Okay, some of the mattings are hideous, I am thinking of using white on white (white mattes on white frames) or maybe a color matte (a dove gray?) with white frames. I am open to suggestions? Whatever is the most cost effective way as usual…. ; )
Here are some vases he sent. They are not staying on this bookshelf, probably will go on a white piece of furniture mixed with something more modern. Oh, just thought of a good spot!
and a couple of bracelets….
He is in the process of looking for a dhurri rug, can not wait to see what he finds!
Now, I have to be honest, sometimes I have a hard time mixing in his treasures with our decor…. Some of the more challenging pieces have been an enormous African shield (with heads carved into it), a large dijurido (which is actually being stored), an African mask, and Chinese temple dogs (apparently off of a real temple in China). So, needless to say, the watercolors were a fantastic surprise. =)
My best tips for working with an eclectic design is using lots of white and gray with touches of black to “ground” things and keep larger pieces of furniture neutral. I also love the look of a caramel or camel leather in eclectic spaces.
Now, if he could just send himself home; the dog, kids, and wife are going a little crazy!!!
