Create a Christmas countdown door hanging with this step-by-step tutorial using ribbon, feathers, poinsettia, and a small chalkboard sign.

Tired of the same old holiday decorations year after year? I can relate. So I was excited when one of my crafty friends showed me how to make a stunning poinsettia door hanging.

Unlike the typical wreaths that adorn doors during the holiday season, this DIY beauty became one of my favorite displays every year. I even gave it a refresh a few years later with black and white ribbons, a delicate white poinsettia, and elegant feathers.

The History of Christmas Countdowns

Before we jump into making our DIY Christmas Countdown Door Hanging, let’s briefly explore the history behind Christmas countdowns. It’s always interesting to know where these traditions come from.

Christmas countdowns have their origins in various traditions, and one of the most well-known is the Advent Calendar. The word “advent” comes from the Latin word “adventus,” which means “coming” or “arrival.” In the Christian calendar, Advent is a significant time of anticipation and preparation for the celebration of Jesus Christ’s birth, beginning on the fourth Sunday before Christmas.

The Advent Calendar, as we know it today, originated in 19th-century Germany. Early versions often featured Bible verses or religious images behind each window, fostering daily reflection and prayer during the Advent season. Over time, they evolved to include small gifts or treats, creating a daily delight, especially for children.

As Christmas traditions spread globally, so did the concept of counting down to the holiday. Today, you can find various forms of Christmas countdowns, including Advent calendars, holiday-themed wall hangings, and, of course, the unique Christmas Countdown Door Hanging we’re about to create.

Understanding the historical roots of Christmas countdowns adds depth to our holiday season. Now, let’s move on to crafting our Christmas Countdown Door Hanging!

Step-by-Step Guide: Creating Your Christmas Countdown Door Hanging

Step One: Ribbon Loops and Centerpiece

Gather your two ribbons and start creating large loops, pinching in the middle to hold them together. Create three loops on each side of the pinched center. (Tip: Hold up the poinsettia to check size and placement before securing it with wire and cutting ribbon from spools.)

Step Two: Ribbon Securing

Secure the ribbon with florist wire, leaving about 18 inches of ribbon to tie bells to.

Step Four: Adding the Countdown

I had picked up a cute little chalkboard sign when I was in WA a couple of weeks ago and was about to write “Merry Christmas” on it when my clever husband said, “hey, why don’t you write down ’23 days to Christmas?'” Awesome. I knew I married him for the right reasons, and now I have a Christmas Countdown door hanging. Even better.
