DIY Cachepot with a Paint Marker

Hello, hello! It’s time for one of my favorite challenges, Inspired by DIY!  This month my friends and I are sharing DIYs inspired by Pottery Barn.  A huge thanks to our hostess Domicile 37 for organizing this series and creating our beautiful graphics.

Scroll to the end to find all of the Pottery Barn inspired decor ideas.

My inspiration piece was a blue lotus cachepot that cost a pretty penny.  What I absolutely love about the pot is it is hand-painted.  I knew I could create something similar.   Especially when it’s okay to have imperfections in a design!  The project costs me under $2.

If you are new here, howdy! I’m a retired military spouse who moved back to Texas after being gone for 19 years.

I perfected the art of rental decorating and overcoming challenges in small spaces for over fifteen years but now am tackling homeownership with a new set of challenges!

Our family of four lived in some of the most beautiful coastal towns in the US and Japan which have influenced my colorful and global style with DIYs and furnishings in our one-story 60’s ranch-style home in Fort Worth.

What is a cachepot? The French word means to hide. You put a plant pot inside a cachepot, a decorative container, to hide the plastic planter.

I love using a cachepot when I don’t want to re-pot a plant after purchasing it. I add a few rocks at the bottom of the decorative planter if the original plastic planter has drainage holes otherwise you can set the plant with its plastic planter right inside the cachepot.

Another fun fact I learned is cachepots were an easy way to bring outdoor plants during the winter in Victorian times.

What you need for this cute and quick DIY cache pot:

I found an inexpensive white plastic one at a local Japanese home decor store. My other supplies came from the 100 yen store which is similar to the dollar store. You can look at any local dollar or craft store for your supplies.

  • A white and plain pot
  • Blue enamel paint marker
  • Tape (painter’s tape or washi tape)

How to paint a design on a cachepot:

  • First, you want to draw two lines to create a band at the top of the pot. Do this by placing a piece of washi tape and tracing the top and bottom to create even lines.
  • Next, use the bottom of the top lines as a guide to create a scallop pattern. Draw small rainbow or arch shapes all of the way around the pot. Start a second line with the arches matching to the middle of the arches above to create the scallop look. Continue until you get about an inch and half from the bottom.
  • Draw lotus flowers directly on top of the scallops (and little stems and leaves) after the ink dries.   Since this is hand-painted, they don’t need to look perfect. 😉 Just draw one or two flowers.

Use another piece of tape at the bottom to create one more straight line.  A fun-“bumpy” detail mirrors the inspiration piece.

The top band of the cachepot has the only perfect pattern.  I used a polka-dotted piece of washi tape for it.

I love the contrast between the black-evenly-spaced polka dots and the hand-painted blue pattern.

Place a cute-little plant and there you have it, an easy-5 minute Pottery Barn-inspired cachepot.

It was really fun to do this project since we are currently stationed in Okinawa, Japan, and Pottery Barn isn’t available. Home decor stores are harder to find here and sizes are usually smaller than what we are used to like furniture, bedding, and picture frames.
