DIY Curtain Tie Backs
Welcome back to another Inspired by DIY challenge hosted by the lovely Jess from Domicile 37. I’ve been most excited for this month because we are using one my favorite stores for inspiration y’all, Anthropologie. Woot woot!
I immediately saw 10 different DIYs I wanted to try but it just so happened that one of my to do list projects was also an Anthro item. Perfecto. My inspiration item was $48 !
So without further ado, I give you DIY Curtain Tie Backs inspired by my favorite store and made specially for my gold canopy bed (with curtains).
There were so many pictures of this DIY that I grouped them with step by step instructions.
Here’s what you need:
Pink soft clay
Jute rope
Tan embroidery floss
Scissors, glue gun, knife, and toothpicks
I found all of my supplies at the local 100 Yen store (as usual). This DIY cost me under $3 and I made four of them! Um, way better than 200 buckaroos!
Part one: Create a rock with soft clay.
I replicated the look of the faceted pink rocks with soft clay in three easy steps:
- Knead the clay and roll into a ball.
- Slice off edges until you achieve the right shape.
- Use a toothpick to poke a hole through the center.
Let “clay rocks” dry for a couple of days before using.
Part two: DIY Tassels with embroidery floss
- Wind the floss around your hand until you have the desired amount.
- Thread a piece of floss through the top loop while it’s laying flat.
- Tie a second piece near the top to secure the tassel threads in place.
- Cut the bottom loops to finish the tassel. (You can also trim any uneven ends.)
Part three: Jute braid for tie back.
- For each tie back, cut three 18 inch long pieces of jute twine.
- Tie one end into a knot.
- Braid the remaining jute and tie a second knot at the other end.
- Use an extra piece to create a loop at the end.
- Secure all ends with hot glue so you end up with a “ball” at one end and a loop at the other.
Thread the tassel through the rock and onto the braided tie back and use!
I made four tie backs so that I could place one at each corner of my canopy bed.
Here’s what the back looks like with the ball and loop as the fastener. I absolutely love how dainty they look on the bed. It catches the light nicely. The clay almost appears iridescent. Here are some more glamour shots!
Now let’s go check out the other Anthro inspired DIYs from my friends. Cheers!

AW! Thanks Cassie. Gosh, my bedroom is turning out girly. At least my husband as a masculine bedside table and doesn’t care. lol
When I found out you were making this, I thought you were going to drill a hole in a rock. Lol, I have my moments. You proved me wrong!!! Love it and the pink clay!!!
lol, I totally would have drilled into rocks if I could have found them! The 100 yen store rescues me again. 🙂
These are so beautiful and I love the ease to make them!!!! Great DIY project Kathy!
Thanks Steph! I could do Anthro DIYs every week! xoxo
How beautiful Kathy! I saw this item when I was browsing for ideas, and I can tell you I wouldn’t have ever been as creative as you have been to use clay. I just love it!!
Wow! I love every single little detail! The “rock”, the braided jute AND the tassel…so pretty! Beautiful job 😉
