Well, my friend, today is a true update of our ensuite bathroom makeover. I really hate not sharing an educational or inspiring article but I’ve been in a creative rut this week so you’re getting the ups and downs of our bathroom renovation that is putting more than a few grey hairs on my head.
Ensuite Bathroom One Room Challenge
Welcome back to the Spring One Room Challenge where 100s of featured and guest designers have eight weeks to transform a space. Can you believe it is already week six? This fun series is sponsored by Better Homes and Gardens and is one of my go-to interior inspiration sources.
UPDATE: You can find all of the Spring One Room Challenge posts including the final reveal below. Due to the nature of the problems we encountered and slow progress each week, I shared articles all about bathrooms and room makeovers to provide helpful tips and DIYs relative to what we were doing.
- Week One: How to Work with a Small Ensuite Bathroom Design
- Week Two: Beautiful and Small Ensuite Bathroom Ideas to Try
- Week Three: How to Choose Bathroom Tiles: A Step by Step Guide
- Week Four: Room Makeover DIY Ideas Before and Afters that are Amazing
- Week Five: The Best Bathroom Plants for No-low Light
- Week Six: An Updated Mood Board and the Realities of a Bathroom Reno
- Week Seven: One Room Challenge Bathroom Update
- Week Eight: A Grey and White Bathroom wtih Garden Accents
You may have noticed that I haven’t been able to share ANY progress yet if you’ve been following along the last five weeks. We’ve had some major setbacks with extensive termite and water damage. The entire bathroom had to be gutted and rebuilt. The framing is almost complete and the drywall should start going up as I type. I’m hoping the shower pan is in before the weekend.
Unfortunately, the damage has gone into the master bedroom, my daughter’s closet, and the hallway closet and those issues will need to be addressed later. (And possible the rest of the house.) Needless to say, some tears were shed this week. Especially since talk of removing my bedroom wall mural and possibly my daughter’s wallpaper that I installed myself were mentioned. All three of our bedrooms are a complete mess right now!
This wouldn’t be completely heartbreaking if we had bought a fixer upper or were renovating the original bathrooms but the entire house was renovated three years ago before we purchased it and none of the these issues were disclosed. Okay, enough of the yucky stuff, let’s move on to the good stuff!
Updated Bathroom Mood Board
Just a couple of changes. First, I decided on a slightly different vanity and it is absolutely gorgeous in person! It looks amazing with gifted Hansgrophe bathroom fixtures from their Joleen collection. I used the same collection in matte black in our hallway bathroom makeover.
Jeffrey Court Tile, Hansgrohe Brushed Nickel Joleena Collection, Clare Paint, Grey Vanity, and Vanity Light Fixture
The second change is a custom light fixture I purchased from Illuminate Vintage on Etsy. It is in brushed nickel with brass accents and is perfect. I really wanted to introduce a warm metal with all of the chrome and grey and this will do the trick.
The art feature will be the painting that was hanging in the bathroom before. My aunt has since passed but this is my favorite of hers. I have a surprise for the wall treatment in my bathroom and can’t wait to see the floral art on it.
I was tempted to hang it in my office once I saw it with the bird wallpaper. I love the colors so much!
Since the bathroom has been ripped down to the studs (and actually most of those had to be removed and rebuilt), we decided to enlarge the shower about 6 inches so we can have a built-in bench. I also had so much fun learning about low-light plants that I plan on incorporating a few for the reveal. Have you ever put a plant in your shower?
Well, that’s it for the real-life update this week. I mentioned I was in a creative rut but that’s not 100 percent true because I did share a few changes and summer touches in a home tour story this week! I think I’m just stressed with half of the house being in shambles right now. But it too shall pass. lol

Oh Man Kathy, Sorry to hear you have had so many issues but hopefully it will all work out for you in the end and you’ll have a beautiful bathroom even better than what you originally planned. Good luck.
You are so sweet Maggie. I appreciate that. We are getting a bigger shower than planned out of all of us so there’s that!
