Kids Table Set Makeover

Greetings friend!  I’m so glad you stopped by today.  If this is your first time here, you can expect to find lots of rental friendly decorating ideas!

Lately, I’ve been working on our family room.  It’s slowly turning into a lovely costal cottage space with some simple DIYs.  One of the biggest eye sores in the room was the IKEA kids table set.

It sticks out like a sore thumb in any room. Grrr. IKEA gets me every time!

I used left over spray paint and interior paint to make the set more appealing.  The little green stool got two coats of Rustoleum yellow (spray paint).   My son painted  Valspar’s primer/paint Seal Gray on the blue chair (I bought a quart for my coffee table makeover, you can find more details here). The red table was painted with primer spray paint and then I mixed Poppies paint powder into a creamy white latex, and gave the top of the table a chalk board finish.

Much better!

Another small change I made in the room is the couch.  My husband and I always remove the large back cushions to create more room for lounging. SONY DSC I decided to remove all of the throw pillows and the back cushions and placed two king size pillows.  I’ll keep you posted on how that works out.  Right now, it’s a better solution than buying a new couch and it does make the seat deeper. I actually love the way it adds to the coastal cottage feel.  My husband immediately loved it after he sat down. rental friendly decorating ideas kids table set makeover

  1. Kathy, The kids table looks perfect in the space, you got the colors just right! Our sofa had the same issue and I made some cushions to replace the overstuffed ones, they’ve made such a huge difference! It’s way more comfortable now and has a much slimmer look that I prefer. Your update is so easy and totally plays up your chandelier and the coastal vibe you have going in the room!

    1. Thanks so much Griffin. So far we love the cushions. I might have to make slip covers out of upholstery fabric to make them more “permanent.”

  2. That is an incredible transformation! I had no ideas that you could paint those bright Ikea chairs and tables. LOVE LOVE LOVE!

    1. Thank you Emily. I’m a firm believer in that you can paint ANYTHING! lol 😉 Where there’s a will, there’s a way.

  3. Kathy how incredible is this?! I will forever be only of your blogging groupies 🙂 You have the MOST GORGEOUS decorating in your home 🙂

    1. Hi Kat! Those curtains are actually fabric purchased from fabricusa.com and handmade. I saw some similar patterns at Hobby Lobby recently. 🙂

  4. You did an awesome job with it! Where did you get the set? I saw IKEA. I am so bummed there is not a store near me. Please tell me you can get this online! 🙂

  5. I love this. I am curious – how has this held up over time? I clean that same Ikea table daily from all of the use. Does it wipe clean just the same? I like the idea of the chalkboard top – I may need to make that happen. Thanks for the idea!

    1. Hi Erin! I was able to wipe clean with chalkboard top but I would suggest a coat of primer. One stool I painted with left over enamel paint and it did great. The other chair was painted with interior latex and it chipped some. Great timing for a follow up!

  6. Great…thanks for the follow up! I’m going to look into the primer and enamel paint for ours. I’m just about the start the process of turning a bland office into a playroom. 🙂
