Rental Kitchen Refresh Update
Greetings! It’s time for an update of our rental kitchen for the New Year New Room Refresh Challenge hosted by Casa Watkins Living. If you are coming from This is Our Bliss, welcome!
New Year New Room Refresh: Global Eclectic Rental Kitchen
week 1 | week 2 | week 3 | week 4
Last week, I shared the mood board and shopping guide with some before pics. No lie, this kitchen is a challenge! We have made some progress so let’s get to it.
We found a kitchen cart at a local thrift store for about $40 which is a good deal for resale furniture in Japan. I really like the wood tone against the gray tile. By the way ,the black pot on the right works as a slow cooker and an oven. It’s a lifesaver but I wish I had room to store when not in use… It’s too big for any cabinets in the kitchen.
My husband took down the hideous, greasy shelf unit that was under the cabinet and installed an IKEA rack so we can display our copper pots. After I finish polishing them, they will be so sparkly and pretty!! Definitely thinking about adding artwork on the tile.
Cute rugs are very hard to find out here (and impossible to ship online) so I repurposed our old foyer rug. It does wonder for the space!
Here’s a little review of the plans with updates.

The plan:
Create a focal point with .
Add more storage and counter space with a kitchen cart/island.
Update hardware with recycled copper pulls from our last rental kitchen.
Add a colorful rug to brighten up the space.
Include more wood tones with counter top storage and cutting boards.
Brighten up the gray tile with a mirror or art.
Display our existing copper pots and pans with a stainless steel rail to free up cabinet space and add more interest.
The biggest “to do” on the list will be the new wallpaper! It’s just gorgeous. My husband and I are trying to decide if we cover the existing textured wall paper or remove it first. Japanese wallpaper is nothing like American wallpaper. Not sure what we’ll find if we try to peel it off!
I now have everything (or at least similar items) from my shopping guide. It’s going to be so much better when it’s finished!
- kitchen bar cart | 2. copper pulls | 3. IKEA rail | 4. copper pots and pans | 5. bohemian pink rug | 6. | 7. gripperwood cutting board

Thanks Steph! I don’t know if I can top my Okinawan cabinets but anything will be an improvement in this kitchen!
Can’t wait to see the progress on the wallpaper.
Me too Ashley! lol It’s definitely going to be the show stopper.
All your choices are so charming! Can’t wait to see!
Thanks Jen! I’m having a love and hate relationship with it right now. lol I know it can only get better, right?!? 😉
The new cart is a great find! Looking forward to seeing the wallpaper up–it looks beautiful!
Thanks! I can’t wait to see the wallpaper up too. lol I’m worried about removing the textured Japanese wallpaper. I guess we’ll see how it goes soon!
I’m loving the updates! That cart looks like it was meant to be in the kitchen. Such a great find! Can’t wait to see more next week!
Thanks Iris! I think we got lucky with the cart. There’s about 3 stores here to shop at! lol
Wow, this is so different from your Okinawa kitchen. Can’t wait to see what you’ll do it it! Miss you Kathy!
It’s SO different. lol I miss having American appliances but I’m always up for a new adventure! Miss you too! xoxo
I love copper pots in a kitchen- the shiny factor always makes a great pop of color. That kitchen cart is a great find!
Thanks! I need to finish making those pots shiny. 🙂
That’s a really good deal for a kitchen cart here, too! I swear this area thinks thrift is on par with antique shops. I like the warm wood against the grey tile, too.
Oh really? I guess it was that way in NC too. I miss thrifting and garage sales in TX. Found the BEST deals. lol Thanks!
