It’s finally time for an update to my daughter’s room makeover. If you missed it, I participated in the New Room New Refresh challenge hosted by my amazingly talented friend, Casa Watkins Living at the beginning of the year. But due to weather and the challenges of living overseas, a few projects were delayed for finishing touches. I’m thrilled to share an updated with a new rug from RUGSUSA and some globally influenced decorating pieces from Smith Honig.
Since my daughter’s room is a traditional Japanese tatami room (washitu), I really wanted to add layers with flat rugs and other textiles. We already had a faux cow tatami rug but a 6×9 flat-woven blue and white diamond rug from RugsUSA definitely makes the space feel more cozy and polished. I chose a flat-weave because of the tatami flooring. The furniture helps keep it in place. We have already spent hours playing on the floor. It’s so comfy and soft! Perfect for board games and barbies.
I want to mention, the color is exactly what I was expecting. With ordering textiles online, this isn’t always the case but I was super happy with the color and texture of this rug. Because it is woven, I’ll have to keep an eye on my cat’s claws and don’t recommend using flat rugs like this in high traffic areas.
Now for some global accessories. I’m just in love with Kellie Smith’s new decor line Smith Honig. She generously offered to let the challenge participants choose items. I picked out an acrylic Japanese women in Kimono with cherry blossoms, a soft velvet suede pillow, and some gorgeous global fabric for my daughter’s small storage ottoman.
The art block’s composition is already familiar to my daughter since we’ve seen many women in traditional kimono these last three years in Japan. It will be such a sweet reminder when we move back to the states of our time here.
I’m just dying over the pillow. It’s so soft and the pattern is unique and beautiful. It really ties in the colors of the room.
Yes, I photographed it all over the place! It compliments the large Cozamia print but also looks great with the new rug. We have a ton of pillows in the room and they do get moved often, especially when we are hanging out on the floor.
Did you spot that amazing fabric on the storage stool? I’ll be sharing more of it in a later post but the quality of the fabric is perfect for upholstery and would make an amazing art piece if framed! (Which I might be doing with some of the leftover.)
The rug and new accessories really make a difference and polish the space. A huge thanks to Kellie from Smith Honig and RugsUSA for partnering with me on this room makeover. Be on the look out for one more quick DIY in this space and then she’s complete!
