It’s So Ugly It’s Cool: Kitchen Table Set
Hey there! It’s the last Tuesday of the month so that means it’s time for It’s So Ugly, It’s Cool, a fun thrift store challenge hosted by my friend Jess from Domicile 37. Last month I shared an easy DIY for a thrifted frame that you can read about HERE.
Since I’m a guest participant for the One Room Challenge, I used my kitchen table set for this thrift store makeover since it was on my ORC to do list. I found my table on Bookoo.com for free! You might remember how it looked when it first came home almost a year ago. It was two-toned and had dog chew marks on the chairs.
I gave the entire set a good sanding and had my first experience with Japanese paint. The hardware stores here are very different. I wasn’t able to translate the labels very well and the paint types and colors are VERY limited. After a week of sanding and painting, it’s first makeover was complete. (You can read about that HERE.)
For the ORC challenge, I knew I wanted to spice up our table set with a little color and my husband gave me a great idea this week. I mentioned color-blocking and he suggested painting from the top of the chairs until they hit the table top line. I loved the idea of the set being white from the table top down and and then a hint of color on top.
To achieve the color blocking look, I simply taped off the top part of the chair spindles and painted two coats.
The paint was kind of mystery again, I wasn’t sure until I opened it if it was water or oil based. It turned out to be a glossy enamel which is a little harder to work with but really durable. It dries really quickly and stands up to homework, food prep, and DIYs really well!
I wanted a light mint, so I mixed a little green and white to get the right tint.
The color is very close to the trim inside our house so it flows beautifully.
Love, love, love how the kitchen is coming along. I’ll be sharing the DIY swiss cross tiles tomorrow. To see the rest of the It’s So Ugly It’s Cool projects, click the links below!
