We are staying cool outside on our back patio thanks to some patio fans and lots of shade and now we are all ready to host al fresco. Here’s our simple yet colorful and eclectic table setting with decorating tips for outdoor entertaining.

Outdoor Entertaining Tips
- Add extra surface space for finger foods and drinks.
Adding extra storage with surface room or an extra small outdoor table will make it easy to keep traffic flowing if you have a crowd. We had a raw edge table cut from Okinawan pine when we were living in Japan. I ordered metal hairpin legs and now it’s a perfect outdoor dining buffet.
A darling little mid-century mod coffee table in the sitting area can easily assist with a food buffet or be used for extra dining.
- Make your table fancy but not fussy.
You can use layers of table textiles and place settings but keep them low maintenance. I love using table linens to freshen up our old outdoor table but use dishwasher safe outdoor dishes with paper napkins and disposable serving ware to make cleaning up a breeze.
- Keep your guests cool and bug free.
Mosquitos are already bugging us here in Fort Worth. Don’t forget to light a few citronella candles if they are a problem in your neck of the woods. And it’s a breeze to have extra folding fans laying around for guests to cool themselves off. 😉
- Create a wow factor with your outdoor decor!
Is it odd that I have an oil painting on my buffet? Maybe but why not! It usually hangs in the laundry but taking the extra minute to grab it and lean it on the buffet where it can be enjoyed really is a piece of cake.
It also makes such a nice feature and backdrop for the dining table. Be sure to take any temperamental decor back inside when your done!
I also hung up an outdoor friendly shell hanging over the dining table and a huge threshing basket both found at thrift stores in Japan.
Our outdoor space really feels like an extension of our indoor living areas all dressed up to enjoy!
