Global Boho Storage Cube Makeover
Well hi there! I hope you are enjoying spring. Our local sakuras (cherry blossoms) are finally in bloom and they are gorgeous!! I’m going to try to go out for a photoshoot tomorrow and then next week starts spring break for us. But first I have a fun DIY to share with you. It’s the last piece for my daughter’s global boho bedroom makeover and I’m just thrilled with how it turned out. The best part is that it hides legos!!
Back in January I participated in the New Year New Room Refresh Challenge hosted by Casa Watkins Living and made over my daughter’s traditional Japanese bedroom into a global boho room. To get you all caught up if you missed any, you can find the mood board, shopping list, decorating tips, and DIYs below.

Here’s how the inexpensive storage ottoman started. It’s super basic and something I grabbed out here in Japan at a local store to hold my daughter’s legos.
It pretty much blended in with the rest of the wood tones in the room. When Kellie Smith from Velvet Finishes and Smith Hönig offered to partner with us on the challenge, I was thrilled to finally have the motivation to give the dull storage cube a much-needed transformation.
Here are the products I used from Kellie’s amazing line of paints and decor.
The paint in “Handsome” came with a cleaning spray and protective coat to eliminate the need for priming or sanding. Awesome! It was so easy to use.
The fabric I chose from the Smith Hönig decor line is this gorgeous pattern inspired by worn vintage rugs. And I’m super pleased to have some leftover so you can expect to see it pop up in future decor!!
How to makeover a kid’s storage cube for global style:
- Measure the lid of the storage cube and cut fabric leaving 2-3 inches extra on each side (or more if you are centering a pattern).
- Fold the edge in 1-2 times before you staple.
- Start at the middle of the top and then attach the bottom making sure the fabric is pulled taught and the pattern stays straight.
- Staple every few inches around the edges. Repeat with the sides.
- Fold the corners in, trimming any excess fabric and staple in place.
- Wipe the sides of the bin with a damp cloth.
- Paint the sides with a contrasting color.
- Add a second coat.
- After it dries, paint a top coat of polyurethane
Or follow the easy instructions on the Velvet Finishes paint.
I love the punch of color it adds! My husband even commented on it. Ha!
I can’t wait to use more of the blue “handsome” paint color. It’s so rich and pretty!
Thanks so much for stopping by! Even though next week is spring break for us, you can expect a post from The Global Styler series and a subscriber freebie.
