DIY Coastal Lamp Makeover

If you are new here, howdy! I’m a retired military spouse who moved back to Texas after being gone for 19 years.

I perfected the art of rental decorating and overcoming challenges in small spaces for over fifteen years but now am tackling homeownership with a new set of challenges!

Our family of four lived in some of the most beautiful coastal towns in the US and Japan which have influenced my colorful and global style with DIYs and furnishings in our one-story 60’s ranch-style home in Fort Worth.

How to Paint a Lamp Base

Clear your workspace and gather the essentials:

  • Valspar’s Color Radiance paint and primer in Flat La Fonda Mirage or other coastal inspired hue
  • Painter’s tape
  • Sisal rope
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks

Ensure proper ventilation for a smooth and safe painting process.

Remove Lamp Components

Begin by unscrewing light bulbs and removing lampshades and any additional hardware. This will help you achieve a professional finish.

Protect Electrical Parts

Use painter’s tape to secure the socket and cord, providing a protective barrier against paint reaching the electrical components.

Apply Paint

Shake the Valspar paint can well. Hold it approximately 12 inches away from the lamp base and apply two or three light coats moving the can slowly from side to side for even coverage. You can sand with fine grit sandpaper any drips between coats and touch up with more paint as needed.

You can test your painting technique on cardboard first! Allow each coat to dry thoroughly before moving on to the next.

DIY Lamp Shade and Base Makeover Steps

DIY Rope Lamp Shade

While waiting for the paint to dry, start gluing the rope around the lampshade using a hot glue gun. Begin alongside the seam on the backside of the shade and continue wrapping until the entire lampshade is covered.

Either start at the bottom or the top covering the starting end a little with the second layer of rope. Tuck in the last cut end into the wrapped rope at the back of the shade where the seam is.

Pro Tip: If you run out of rope, consider twisting together pieces of twine for a seamless extension. It’s a cost-effective solution that keeps the project budget-friendly.

Finishing Touches

Allow the painted lamp base to dry completely before reassembling. 48 hours is a good amount for the lamp to cure.

Reassemble

Once everything is dry, reattach the lampshade to the base. Screw in the light bulbs and ensure all hardware is securely fastened.
